The first new issue of Complex Magazine for 2012 is about to hit newsstands and none other than ASAP Rocky and Jeremy Scott have gotten the cover story. One of the most hyped young rappers and always much discussed fashion designer Jeremy Scott certainly make for an interesting match.

“Complex: Why do you think hip-hop is so fascinated with fashion and vice versa?
A$AP ROCKY: As black people it was our thing to show that we’re not living in poverty and that we can afford extravagant things—that kind of stuck with us. So when our great-grandparents were putting on their favorite outfits, it was to put on a front for the hard time. And hip-hop is a bunch of people that never had nothing. Fashion is just an expression. It’s an art. It expresses your taste. Good taste is important in hip-hop. I wake up saying I’m going to look the best I can and do what the fuck I want to do. And that’s what it’s all about. I don’t know if I articulated it good because im pretty high right now—and I have a lisp and I’m going to Mars right now.
Jeremy Scott: [Laughs]. The thing is hip-hop is one of the only communities that really started its own trends.
A$AP ROCKY: Wow.
Jeremy Scott: That’s why I’ve always been inspired by hip-hop artists, because they transform things—even just the jean, turning it around, inside out, sagging it—all these different things. Yes, of course we get little things from other music movements, but hip-hip has been like, Pow! It’s really inspiring and it’s the only new music that has come along in eons. Rock and roll has been around—it’s changing forms. But hip-hip is major.”

A recent graduate from London College of Fashion and our 60th designer to join MUUSE, we proudly present to you – ~~Ho Man Stephanie Wong~~.Stephanie is a designer who lives and breathes for fashion – she draws inspiration from art, graphical elements and cultures. Her main interest is creating intricate pattern and delicate design details as shown in her collection “~~Extraordinary Pigeon~~” that she is launching with us today. Her work always takes on loose fit and unisex style while exploring the character of the material and adding it into her designs. “Extraordinary Pigeon” is inspired by the nature and the paintings of Giuseppe Arcimboldo along with different photographs of pigeons. From the paintings of Arcimboldo, Stephanie came up with the idea of how she could use animal skin in a more environmentally friendly manner. It led her into exploring alternative sources of materials that are not animal-based but more sustainable and affordable. Being influenced by the structural and layering collage of Arcimboldo’s paintings and by creating fake skins and fur-like materials instead of using real fur or leather, has resulted in an extraordinary collection. Not only is it playful and interesting with the asymmetric cutting and mix of colors, but the use of nontraditional layering and different materials in one garment makes each and every piece in her collection an exceptional craftwork. Helen Bullock's S/S2012 collection came about through the desire and need to create something bold and statement like. After watching the 60s movie Candy she was inspired by the over sized banners with blocks of colour, enjoying their immediacy, and simplicity. Images from 70s magazines, with models wearing skirts with curved splits in them, and outsider art pieces were directly referenced in her drawings, which are a starting point for designing. The hand puppets of Paul Klee, with their large oversize silouhette and mismatched fabrication are referenced in the shapes of the garments, along with an urge to cut in to the cloth, driven by her mood and feeling at the time, paralleled with images of Gordon Matta Clarks brutal yet beautiful architecture. The collection begins with the illustrations, and is then pulled together by the development of a strong colour pallette. Things come together once in the print room, where the fabric is treated like a canvas.

The body then works as a stage for these really large paintings, which hopefully empower and delight.

Lisa Grue graduated from the Design School of Denmark in 2001, where she studied illustration, fashion, and fine art. She started the creative platform Underwerket in 2002, and she has carved quite a name for herself and Underwerket with her work, illustrating and doing graphic design for books, fashion and design magazines, as well as fashion labels.
Lisa has garnered applause — along with occasional outrage — with her sublime cocktail of zany ideas, superbly ambiguous humor, in-your-face attitude, and poetic femininity. Fashion and beauty magazines,
T-shirt brands, and fashion and publishing houses have all taken notice of her original work. Lisa/ Underwerket is an especially active personality in the Danish design environment, appearing in several exhibitions in Denmark and Europe. She was recently honored as one of the new design talents of Denmark, with a grant from the National Art Foundation of Denmark.
The strong work has steadily brought her attention around the world and can be seen in several international books on illustration and design.

Wood Wood has again teamed up with Hamburg retailer YBDPT STUDIO, this time to

present their in-season collection for Winter 2011/12. For the launch of the YBDPT

webstore, German photographer Jens Kaesemann shot the editorial "TODAY IS THE

SHADOW OF TMRW" featuring the key pieces of the collection.

The YBDPT webstore offers a fine selection of exclusive brands and designers from all

over the world with the focus on quality and longevity. In close cooperation with their

local photographer Jens Kaesemann, who is famous for his documentation about youth

and street cultures, they brought out an arty lookbook which should reflect the dark side

of the in-season collection. True to the motto: It`s a black Christmas.

With his magazine Sang Bleu, Swiss creative director Maxime Büchi publishes one of the most beautiful magazines out there. Since the publication focuses a very sophisticated mix of art, fashion, literature, tattooing, body modification and fetish, it comes only natural that Maxime got into tattooing himself. »It’s only now that I can see the smoke clearly, but it’s a lifetime thing«. Influenced by his background in graphic design and typography (in 2006 he started B&P TypeFoundrytogether with Ian Party), he developed his very distinct style featuring clean, geometric lines and occidental illustration.

When The Avant/Garde Diaries asked him to introduce someone who he considers to be avant-garde, it came to no surprise that he came up with tattoo legendAlex Binnie, founder of Into You, arguably London’s most famous tattoo studio. Alex was a true pioneer in the tattoo world when he started with his own place in 1993 after tattooing in Hollywood for a couple of years. »At that point, Into You was pretty much the first truly custom tattoo shop in London. The whole tattoo landscape was completely different then, there were no magazines, there were hardly any shops, tattooing was an underground scene,« he explains. As much as he still enjoys tattooing, the whole change of the scene got Alex started to concentrate on producing art on other surfaces than the human body. From 2000 on, he started out with silk screens, spent a few years getting to grips with the medium, before turning to woodcuts.

Moving on and developing more ways of expressing one’s own artistic vision, is also what Maxime pursues with his latest publication Novembre, a magazine about fashion and contemporary art from Switzerland.

When A-Trak and Armand Van Helden make a music video for one of the most illogical and weird song (i don’t say that, they did…), the result is Big Bad Wolf. In this strange imaginary world, the persons have human heads in lieu of genitals. Despite this change, they try to live: they work, go shopping and “have sex”. If you disliked the song, you can’t miss the music video which is so funny and original. When i listened this song for the first time, i thought about the “Big Bad Wolf” of McBess. Two artistic visions for the same aesthetic success!

Now smart initiates the FUTURE OF THE CITY AWARD (with a final voting in January 2012). Within the 1st round »Month Of Photography« Canadian born and Berlin based electronic musician Peaches was requested to ask 8 photographers around the world: »What sounds will you create or play to help your urban farm grow?«

Urban farming is an increasingly important part of sustaining our future and taking control of what and how we eat. It is getting more and more difficult, especially in urban environments to obtain real fresh organic food. The 8 photographers were challenged by this topic and showed their vision of the future. One of the contributing artists is Yuji Hamada from Japan with his photo series Pulsar (seen above):

»›Plants might listen the sounds that we cannot listen.‹ This idea comes from my experience. When I closed my eyes under the sun, I still felt the sunlight before my eyes. If it were up to me. I´d spare you the intro about the most famous party photographer as of today... Cobrasnake. Aka Mark Hunter drops his suitcases at the hippest parties on the globe. From Tokyo to New York. Via Paris. Immortalising irrelevant moments at every must-be-seen reunion. Day and Night. His Snapshots are outrageous and make everybody go buzzirk for a publication on ~~thecobrasnake~~.

StellDirVor: You must get that one often, but why CobraSnake?

There´s really no exciting story behind the name but I do have a scar on my hand and I tell people that I was bitten by a cobra when I was in the boy scouts. It´s a pretty good story!

SDV: Tell us how one becomes the coolest, most famous and most seen party photographer on the globe?

That´s very flattering. I´m not really any of those things. The people that I photograph are, I´m very lucky to be around some of the most amazing musicans, artists, fashion designers, cool kids from all around the world. Some of their coolness must rub off on me. That´s why I never shower!

SDV: You mostly take snapshots at parties, ever felt like doing something else?

I don´t just take snapshots. I have a fitness club, I have a business selling vintage clothes and I work on lots of other fun projects all the time. Snapshots are like 50 percent of my workload an I love them.

SDV: Can you think of something you never seen before, or a person you´ve never met that you´d like to take a picture of?

Would be cool to meet a ghost and hang out and go to Disneyland with them.

SDV: A great party is?

Full of cute girls, good music, lots of fun things like balloons and stuff.

SDV: And where are they at?

You can really have a great party anywhere. I have travelled to the most random places and found amazing parties, so there´s always a room for fun.

SDV: Was it you who made Cory Kennedy an i- star?

Not really she was a superstar before I met here.

SDV: DimMak are your mates, what´s it like in this big family?

Yes I love Steve Aoki and Dimmak! We have really done some crazy thing together. Travelling everywhere from Paris, Australia, Tokyo and everywhere else cool.

SDV: Your best memory?

Too many memories to remember.

SDV: Tell us about your range of tees?

Just opened a concept shop in the mall in Hollywood and Highland. It´s out of control, full of amazing things if you come to Los Angeles it´s totally important that you come visit the shop!

For this collection, the Japanese words Otona (Adult) and Codomo (Child) are combined to create the word ''Codona''. The Codona collection refers to the adult who retains the curiosity, the openness and the playfulness of a child without the prejudice learnt in later life. The collection is variable and playful but mature at the same time. It shows variations of inside out and upside down, playing with forms and colours while leaving the wearer freedom to experiment.

I admire ~~Stine Goya~~ for her strong and beautiful signature style – you always directly know at first sight: This is Stine Goya. But unfortunately for me it’s often too girly, flowy and ruffley. So I always look at Stine Goya shows for those pieces which are maybe not the typical Stine Goya standard.

The pieces / combinations I liked the most of her summer collection 2012 you can see above. The metallic dress and those details like the shoes or the fringes on the poncho are super, I also like the pastell-grayish colour range, the yellow and especially the pink.

I think the collection is very solid and maybe a bit like a sampling of the last collections – have you noticed? The models all wear Stine’s own hairdo as wigs!!! Therefore (of course) there’s a bit innovation lacking. Metallics, flowy semi-transparent silk and angora knits are very nice but nothing very new.When I met Stine herself she seemed a bit less elegant and a bit more street for me, but this might be for the reason we met at the Soulland party last year. If her collections could be a bit more like this I would rave more about them.

Style Wars 2 “Parody” Trailer

The original Style Wars by Henry Chalfant has been a cornerstone of graffiti documentation since its official début in 1984. Since the original, there has been much talk about a new updated release that modernizes some of the people and themes discussed in the inaugural documentary. A Style Wars 2 trailer has popped up and while it hasn’t been headed by Chalfant himself, the parody piece has received the praise and blessing from the filmmaker. No word yet on the official release of Style Wars 2.

Based in Copenhagen, Wood Wood embodies that laid back blend of underground and high-end way of thinking, hoping to surprise across the board with a distinct selection of styles. Wood Wood is celebrated for its graphic and playful prints.

The new season’s looks are inspired by the many different moods and vibes experienced on various trips through Southern California, both physically and mentally. Touring along the scenic coast-lines and staring out into the water, driving through the streets of Los Angeles and smoking peyote in the desert is seen in the colors, prints, cuts and fabrics throughout the collection, while also referencing the many aspects of Americana and its inspiring mix of people and cultures, such as the hippies, collegiate lifestyle and Native Americans.

Natural materials, such as sand-washed silk, fluffy angora wool, jacquard woven knits and fine surpima cotton are all applied on classic Wood Wood silhouettes and casual women’s looks reminiscent of the sixties, yet new and exciting.
