FRANCISKA HJERMOV

Franciska Hjermov, 22. The Danish Design School, Fashion BA Graduate 2010.
- specialism: Fashion Menswear

Design Background:
Around the age of ten I got interested in art, design, architecture and fashion history. I took drawing lessons and collected antiques. Later, when I was fourteen I did an internship in the clothing department at the Danish National Museum. For a long time I wanted to become a restoration architect, but somehow I decided to apply for fashion school instead – to do “architecture” in a smaller scale and in softer materials (fabrics).
What was the most valuable you learned before starting at your education?
Be curious and search for knowledge.
What are your strengths?
I am cultured and strong-minded with a good intuition.
What are your weaknesses?
I am a dreamer.
Describe your collection with three words?
Dramatic, mysterious and gloomy.
What techniques did you use?
The bog and mound people wore fur capes and I wanted to do a modern interpretation.  Saga Furs sponsored two foxes and a raccoon. Fur is a tremendous material.  The other styles are made of wool, silk, cotton and a weird suede-ish fabric – all chosen because of their texture. Finding the right materials with an interesting tactility is crucial to my collections.
Do you have a technical or conceptual approach to designing?
A tactile and conceptual approach.
How long did you work on this project?
Nine weeks.
What made you pursue your fashion?
Menswear is for me about perfection, materials, cut, layers, lines.  The covered up sensuality and silent drama.  I want to do simple and elegant clothing that can be kept and worn for years.

What are your plans for the future?
This autumn I am planning to do an internship as a part of my MA.
Will you be selling your BAcollection?
I have thought of selling my BA collection as unique pieces.
